Correction Medical Review Board

The New York State Commission of Correction’s Correction Medical Review Board (Board), established under Correction Law §43 and the functions established under Correction Law §47, is responsible for the investigation and review of the cause and circumstances surrounding the death of any incarcerated individual of a correctional facility, for making recommendations to prevent the recurrence of such deaths to the Commission and the administrator of the correctional facility, for the investigation and reporting to the Commission on the condition of systems for the delivery of medical care to incarcerated individuals of correctional facilities and where appropriate make recommendations concerning the changes the Board deems necessary and proper to improve the quality and availability of such medical care.  

The Board is chaired by Commissioner Yolanda Canty.

The Board consists of six persons who are appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the senate. Members include one individual that is a physician duly licensed to practice in New York, one individual that is a physician duly licensed to practice in New York and is a board-certified forensic pathologist, one individual that is a physician duly licensed to practice in New York and is a board-certified forensic psychiatrist, one individual that is an attorney admitted to practice in New York and two individuals that are appointed at large. Members of the Board receive no compensation for their services but are reimbursed for their actual and necessary expenses that are incurred in the performance of their duties.

The Board meets quarterly. The Board's next meeting will be December 7. All meetings are scheduled for 10:30 AM at the Alfred E. Smith Office Building in Albany, NY.

In accordance with Correction Law §47, the Board is required to submit a report regarding an incarcerated individual’s cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the death and any recommendations to prevent the recurrence of such death to the Commission.
